That Voice in Your Head

Linda Soller | Apr 22, 2024

So often we hear a little voice in our head telling us something is wrong. It may tell us to do something very specific. We may ignore it, but that isn’t such a good idea. On Sunday the 14th of April there were sirens blasting on the roads during our church service. It’s not unusual because we are located at a busy intersection and just up the street from the fire department.  As we often do, most of us blocked out the noise.

Later just before noon at the end of our Bible Study class the sirens began again.  This time was different. The sirens kept coming. I stopped the class to say, “We need to pray for the first responders and the people they are trying to help, all these sirens can’t be good.” And we did pray as we closed our lesson. My mother headed home, and I followed her. There was a problem. All the police, fire, and rescue vehicles were blocking the street including her driveway. As it turned out that little voice in my head which said this can’t be good you need to pray was right. A domestic dispute in a neighbor’s house had ended up with two adults and a dog all suffering life threatening injuries. We didn’t really know the couple involved, but we do know the father. He was out of town. The neighbors felt helpless.

The situation was terrible and sad on so many levels. We may never know the details, and honestly it isn’t really our business. What I can say is that as of this writing the victims (wife and pet) are in stable condition and the suspect (husband) is still in ICU. The officer who used his service weapon to subdue the suspect is on leave while the situation is investigated. Lives all around changed in a flash. No one will forget that afternoon. Christians often spend too much time doing nothing.  If they can’t change the world, why do anything. We can’t be that way. We need to do what we can and that includes listening to the voice in our head and praying. As bad as it was, it could have been so much worse. You will never convince me that God did not hear our prayers that Sunday.

Be kind, be brave, have faith!  : )   Linda
