The In-between

Linda Soller | Dec 26, 2022

You have made it through the holidays, well almost. You are now in the gray area I call “The In-between” time. It’s a not so magical time when you awake unsure of what you are supposed to do and how you are supposed to feel. How your Christmas went may impact the direction you take. Perhaps there is an urge to return gifts, or purchase something you actually wanted and could use. We’ve all had those holidays. Or if you’re lucky, you may be waking in the glow of feeling loved and validated as a generous caring human being. Chances are you greet the day somewhere in-between. Really you only have a week to figure it out before you start a new year by celebrating the New Year. The pressure is on. When you were five a week felt like forever, but we all know it’s not very long.

I’ve been talking about how we feel and see things these past few weeks. This is not because I’m an expert, it’s because like you I’m human. No two Christmas seasons are alike, things change, and we adjust. Or try to. I really loved when I made cookies that my daughters and husband would decorate. We all laughed and had fun. I tried to keep this tradition with my grandchildren but quickly realized they have their own traditions and well, there are only so many weekends. So, I accept that a cookie decorating tradition may have to be connected to another holiday. It happens. In the past I worked during the in-between time. I sometimes resented that my co-workers had time off. This year, still a rookie retiree, I don’t have a place to be or obligation to meet. I have no one to resent but neither do I have a direction. I guess finding that direction, a goal, or my passion is up to me. How hard can it be?  Afterall, I have a week.

On a local radio show they gave a quote for the day. It went something like – There are two types of lives to live. One is lived not believing in miracles, and the other is living as though everything is a miracle. In this in-between time, I choose to believe in miracles. A child was born, they called Him Jesus.
