The Owls Have It

Linda Soller | Mar 28, 2022

When we moved to our home we knew there might be some wildlife around us. Behind our house were acres of old growth trees and you felt like you were far away from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia. We have not been disappointed. Maybe I should say we’ve had plenty of wildlife. There have been a few disappointments. The deer routinely eat our flowers, leaving stems resembling very evenly clipped grass. At times there’s a whiff of skunk from the prior night of prowling. Raccoon babies were born in our attic, and we constantly chase squirrels from our bird feeder. The foxes cut through our yard screeching. Our siding looks like Swiss cheese courtesy of the woodpeckers. All in all it feels like a nature preserve. It’s hard to say which critters demand most of my attention. Enter our newest neighbors, a pair of Barred Owls.

Last August I heard a very strange calling. We did what all nature lovers do we went on the Internet and found a soundtrack that matched what I’d heard. It was the cry of a Barred Owl. But, it seemed to be a onetime thing, until this winter when the sound was heard again, and again, and very close to the house. I must admit that the hoot of the Barred Owl sounds a little creepy. I can see why it keeps other owls away. So here we are with a pair of Barred Owls residing somewhere near our house. Did I mention they are pretty verbal and seem to prefer to chat right after you fall asleep and about four in the morning to help you start your day?  I have seen a lone Owl on three different occasions. It was too dark to see the creature clearly, but there’s no mistaking the general shape and that sound.

I share this because it is officially spring and nature is waking up. God had some fun with his creations, and even when the sound of the owls wakes me from a peaceful sleep I find myself jumping to the window just in case I can get a glimpse.  Which critters have my attention? The owls have it.  Everyday I thank God for this wonderful world we share.

Happy Spring!  :o)
