There was only one item he simply had to have, a package of frozen chopped organic kale for his morning smoothy. He went first to his favorite store, but they were out and had been for weeks. Customer service said, “The vendor is temporarily closed”. Next, he went to his second favorite store. They were also out of what he needed. They didn’t know why.
The woman went to the market hoping to find disinfectant wipes, among other things. Week after week she had searched. This day was no different, she looked everywhere but didn’t see any. Then the woman saw a lady with a container of wipes pass her in the aisle. The woman went up and down two aisles, but she didn’t see the disinfectant wipes anywhere.
The early morning walks in my neighborhood would be called quiet by most. But I call them noisy with the shouts of joy. The signs cry out Congratulations Waples Mill Elementary Class of 2020, Virginia Tech Here I Come, New Colgate Alum, and there are even the chirps of a large wooden stork in pale blue announcing a new life has arrived.
The signs had evolved, “closed due to COVID-19”. A few weeks later a sign appears – “Delivery Available.” Shortly after that we saw – “Delivery and Curbside Pickup Available”. Now the signs in many places have added “Inside Dining Available.” Are things back to normal? No, they are not. Normal is not what these signs are telling us, these signs are saying something else.
Confession time. I, like many others was at first a bit confused by the “Black Lives Matter” posters. My reaction was, of course they do, all lives matter. I couldn’t imagine anyone who would reason otherwise. But, as it sinks in, I have come to a different understanding.
With COVID-19 the importance of signs and banners cannot be overstated. Well, that is my opinion. Everywhere we go we see signs of life through posters, banners, yard signs, and placards. Over the next couple of weeks, I want to explore what these signs have really been saying.
