Chapter Four

Linda Soller | May 06, 2013

When I approached Pastor Sean about this blog I was so excited that he liked the idea. Even better was the fact that he didn’t ask to review the material. I didn’t intend to write anything that would upset him, but his support and trust was very freeing. Each week I have the opportunity to pick a thought or a topic and go with it. This week I’ve decided to advertise a new activity at FBC that is open to the entire community.

There are many people who resist going to church because they think if they go in the building something will be expected of them. They aren’t always sure what, but they think it will be money, or time, or a commitment they are unwilling to make. I can’t tell you they are wrong because based on my limited knowledge even I am aware of some churches that seem to be in the taking mode.

On Monday May 6 a new group will be meeting at FBC. It isn’t a Bible study class. It isn’t another knitting/crocheting group like the Yarn Yarn Sisterhood. There won’t be any musical instruments or singing or bell ringing. All of these things are available already. What could it be, you may ask? I will give you some hints. Have you ever read a book and thought to yourself, I could have written that? Have you ever read a poem and thought, how did they make those words flow beautifully? Have you ever wondered how people get ideas for articles? Have you guessed yet? That’s right, there will be a new community writing group meeting at FBC on the first and third Monday nights of each month (starting May 6) from 6:30 to 7:30 in room 200, and it is called Chapter Four. There will be authors and publishers speaking and all types of writing will be encouraged. Maybe you have a poem inside you, or the next great novel, or even a blog. You may be surprised by your own talent or simply appreciate the skills of others. Nobody will be grading you!

You may ask yourself; why would a church create a writing group? Well I can tell you it is not because the church is expecting to get something from the group. It is because the church is giving something to the community. That something is support and a place to gather for those who have, wish they had, or hope to develop writing skills. God has given all of us skills and talents and most of the time we neglect them, dream about using them, or purposely hide them. We were given those talents and dreams to use, not to hide.  A church that believes in supporting its congregation and its community provides opportunities to use talents and to reach for dreams. It is part of a joyful collaboration that connects us to God and helps us touch the lives of others.

If you are reading this and thinking, “I hope she goes to that group and improves her blog,” well I am planning on doing just that. See you there?

Have a great week :o) Linda
