Finding Your Balance

Linda Soller | Aug 07, 2023

Reluctantly I returned from vacation. Ahead of me was a week packed full of activity. It was almost as if two weeks of my regular life were being crammed into the third week. I needed to find my balance again. No longer were my days my own. There were appointments to be met, people to please, children to watch, classes to attend, and it made me a bit dizzy. It didn’t go so far as to offset the benefits of my vacation. It just required a focused approach. So, I did what any self-respecting organized person would do. I got out my calendar and started a list, two lists if you must know.  One was a reminder of the key event or responsibility for each day and the other was a list of things that needed to be done but could occur at my convenience during the coming week.

I am sure you have been in this position. Maybe you returned from vacation or maybe business travel. I remember when my husband traveled frequently for work. It was so hard for him to come home and slide into the family routine. As I tried to get back to normal even the familiar seemed strange to me. Each night I had to check my calendar and lists for the next day activities. Each morning I checked the day of the week, just to be sure. Gradually I found my balance. My efficiency slowly returned, and the laundry was finally done. My head was no longer spinning.

In life there are always tradeoffs. You get a new job and again you are learning your way around. You move to a new house and again you are learning where the water turns off and when the trash is picked up. You must balance the familiar with the unfamiliar, and the former patterns with the new ones. You go through this process so you can have the positives like a new job, or a new house, or in my case a great vacation. In the big scheme of things, I think it’s worth it. Finding your balance is just what you do.
