Lego Sprawl

Linda Soller | Jul 31, 2023

It has been a while since you’ve had an update on Lego land at my house. Lego Lesson 4 dealt with my concerns for the infrastructure supporting the rapid growth. My concerns remain, but it appears the citizens of Lego land have a different concern. Let me set the scene. Lining the playroom is a card table next to a table made from a closet door which sits at a ninety-degree angle to another closet door table along the adjacent wall. Gradually this expansive site has filled with Lego life. At one end you have the mountains and woodlands, and at the other the beach, with sub-divisions and a downtown area in between. The citizens (grandchildren) have requested more open space.  It seems they feel the over development prevents them from fully enjoying their surroundings. From the mouth of babes!

When we all gathered to discuss our priorities, it was clear that a re-development had to take place. This might include a bit more space, but it will certainly include change. Negotiations began immediately with the space development company known as Grandaddy Ltd. Talks are moving slowly, but I’m confident the citizens will win out.  They are a determined group. Meanwhile, the snow mountain has temporarily been moved to a shelf on the bookshelf. The farm and farmer’s market are on the shelf below (lower elevation).  Both are more accessible, and the farm animals can graze. No new roads for now. Citizens will walk and ride bikes. These changes allowed for more space for the woodland camping area, the equestrian center, and the beach area. Clearly the citizens value relaxation and nature.

My point is simple. The children love their Lego land and seem fine with the fact that we are no longer adding new elements on a regular basis. They also think that the outdoors spaces are key. We decided that bumping into one building (sometimes knocking it down) to get to another is not sustainable. The children are willing to make some adjustments for a more pleasant Lego land. To my mind it’s a hopeful sign that our children appreciate what is important. They may be too young to change things now, but they are not too young to embrace the need for change. Maybe this is Lego lesson 5?
