No Script Required

Linda Soller | Aug 22, 2022

A script is given to actors to direct their communications and actions. For a life of faith there is no script required. Christians have tons of freedom. The path to faith, the faith experiences, and the actions we take based on faith are different for each person. We have strong guidance through the Bible, our prayerful communication with God, and the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are totally free to make decisions. It is one of God’s greatest and most selfless gifts. But if we are honest, we must admit that most of us have made some lousy decisions. God could have had a lot less trouble with us had He given us a script.

Not having a script leaves some Christians confused. I find that we react in one of three ways. Some lock into the literal translation of the Bible, the pastor’s last sermon, or what they remember their parents saying. They are making a choice not to change and that means they can’t truly listen for fear they will be persuaded. Group two may not take anything literally and so they feel free to float about in between what they are told to do and how they want to act, counting on God to overlook their lack of effort.  The third group reacts in a more balanced way. Unfortunately, this group often falls silent, fearing they will ruffle feathers, or have to provide some concrete explanations they don’t have on the tip of their tongue. The first two groups seem totally comfortable verbalizing their views, using their “faith” for their own convenience and gain. Their roar sets the tone.  The third group fears the worst yet struggles to verbalize, and thus their ability to smooth and calm is lost.

Is there a solution? I don’t have a quick one and I don’t know which group you fall into, but you do.  If you are in group three know that no script is required. Be creative in your dealings with others. Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t have the answer, but I know what I believe.” Group one can be especially intimidating because they can’t accept being wrong. Jesus met people in that group as well. He didn’t need a script; He needed to stay true to Himself and His message. That is what He asks of you.
