The Drop In Class

Linda Soller | Jul 09, 2012

The Drop In Class is really special to me. Bible study at FBCH takes place right after the service, so we get started about 11:15 and the Drop In Class meets just across the lobby from the sanctuary in the Fellowship Hall. Besides being a short walk to class, another advantage is that we are in the same room with the coffee and goodies. Sometimes this fact gets us off to a slightly slow start, but we catch up. Who comes to Drop In? Visitors of all ages and “Do Drops” (our regulars) of all ages come in and sit around the tables to listen and share and hopefully learn a little something. I try to come up with some fun topics to make folks try to guess what in the world we will be talking about that day. Most months we have a theme. Truth is I do most of the talking, but we all do a fair amount laughing. Sometimes laughing with me, often at me, is a friendly, low-key group.

Some of our regulars like the informality of our class and others like that they can come and go and not feel like they are “behind” in a subject because they missed a week. Then there are my mom and dad who come because well, they are my mom and dad! Sure there are other Sunday school classes for adults that are a little more traditional in structure, but the Drop In Class still wins hands down for crazy topics. Why do we take this approach? I think that coming to church fills many needs, not the least of which is to challenge people to apply their faith to their everyday world.

I regularly share a Wegmans grocery store story! Church should not beat you down, but should lift you up and support you. Church should be that place you can go to knowing that you share a bond with your fellow believers, not feel like you are in bondage. The Drop In Class is my attempt to address all of the above. In trying to prepare each week I have observed God working in so many places where I never really saw him before. This week when you see a street sign or hear a news flash or visit your grocery store of choice, ask yourself how is God at work in this place at this time. You may be surprised at just how busy God is in your life. Have a great week! Linda
