The age thing

Linda Soller | Oct 22, 2012

Last week I wrote about my high school reunion. It made me think about the expression, “you are only as old as you feel.”  My question is whether we are talking about how our bodies feel or how our minds feel. It has been my experience that more often than not my mind and my body are not even on speaking terms. Case in point: I am sitting on the couch, feet up, in my jammies, drinking my hot tea and watching “Dancing with the Stars”.  My feet are keeping the beat, and my brain is thinking, “I used to dance, I could do that.”  No really, that is what my brain is saying! The next thing you know my feet stop tapping and my body snickers a little, “sure you can, in your dreams.” In moments like those it is clear that my brain and my body are two different ages.

It is easy to take a seat on the couch and watch life happening around us. It is easier to tell ourselves that we can do something than to actually try it.  As children we tend to act first and think later. The lessons we learned as children make us cautious as we grow older.  Before you know it we have convinced ourselves of how much we cannot do. Our bodies and our minds start to believe those limitations.  It is sad that we have so little faith in ourselves.

It is fortunate that God places such faith in us to serve no matter what our age. Over and over again through the Bible we read about older people serving the Lord even when his plans for them were hard for them to imagine or even made them laugh.  God proved that through him, all things are possible. Whether it is your mind or your body that is taking the lead, make sure it is going down the path of faith and God will be there to support you. Have a great week.
