Plan Changes

When I was a child, I always wished for a snow day on my December birthday. Not so much as an adult. Actually, what I wanted was a day off from school. We did have snow once or twice on my big day, but never enough to close school. Having schedules and plans change is not such a big deal for kids. Sometimes the changes are better than the original. But when you’re an adult, changes often bring challenges that you could have happily lived without. Even when the change is harmless or pretty good it can wreak havoc on your plans. And in the end, all of us make plans. Maybe you aren’t an over-planner like me, but you laid back folks plan, if only to be laid back for the day.
At this time of year, it can be challenging for Christians to have their priorities in place. We don’t live particularly near our church and one Christmas we headed out to the Christmas Eve service in the snow, only to turn around. Our plans changed and I was so sad to miss the service. I knew God understood that it was not safe for us to go, but I wanted to be there. Now with the larger family (grandchildren!) added to the mix with all of their activities the calendar can fill up quickly. Sunday mornings are never challenged but other times can be tough to balance. You want to do the “fun” Christmas stuff, but you need to focus the “heart and soul” Christmas stuff.
I can only imagine that Mary and Joseph had much to do as they awaited the birth of their baby. But the Roman government had other plans. Can you even imagine what was going through their minds as they headed to Bethlehem? Not an easy trip and especially demanding for them. They didn’t have a choice it wasn’t for fun. Despite a lodging shortage, they had their faith, they had each other, they had God, and the world’s savior was born. This Christmas be sure to make room for your faith, your heart, your soul, and spread the blessings no matter what the weather may bring. No matter what plan changes might arise.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
