Milestones

When is an event a milestone? Well at my age another birthday probably counts. But what events in your life have been milestones? When my nephew and his wife had their first child recently, I couldn’t help but think of when our girls were born, and then our grandchildren. Throw in a couple of big anniversaries, a few weddings, and sadly a few passings and you have a list of milestone dates. Some of those dates are easy to forget and others may be burned in your memory. For Christians this time of year is so special. Not just because it is festive and there are cookies, although that doesn’t hurt. For Christians we feel we watch and participate in a beginning. A milestone if there ever was one. A beginning of something so much bigger than any one of us. We are united in the story of the Christ child. When other songs can’t be recalled, we easily sing our favorite Christmas hymns and carols. It’s a sacred, hopeful, joyful, peaceful, loving time of year.
We begin Advent this week with the candle of Hope. How appropriate that we start with the hope God gives to see us through each challenging day. As we move forward each week contemplating Peace, Joy, Love and ultimately the Christ child let’s take a deep breath. Let’s reach out a helping hand to those in need. Let’s care for those around us, some we know well and others we may not know at all. Make each day a milestone day. Live as though each day is special and worth remembering. Take the hope we receive so freely and spread it around. If I asked you in January what were the milestone days of Christmas 2025, will you have an answer? You can make a difference.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
