Change is Coming

Thanksgiving is a favorite of mine. I know I’ve said that before, and will no doubt say it again. There is so much to be thankful for. There is no expectation of flashy lights, elaborately wrapped gifts, or endless singing. Not that any of those things are particularly bad, but they can be distracting. At Thanksgiving we gather with family and/or friends. These are people who give meaning to our lives. People you can be thankful for. We gather around a table which may be take-out or turkey, but we are sharing in what we need to nourish us. The food keeps us going and hopefully giving. We picture togetherness, be it a football game on TV, or a fireside chat. The people we care about are in all those pictures. Yet change hangs over our heads.
I looked out my window today and saw leaves. Leaves covered the ground, leaves floated in the air, and leaves clinging to the tree limbs waiting their turn to fall. Autumn is a time to embrace change. The hot days of summer are few and far between. The bitter cold of winter is still just a hint in the gusty breeze. But there is no getting around the fact that change is coming.
I would offer a challenge today. Starting now decide to say something kind to someone every day. You can start with people you know. But try to add in strangers as soon as you can. It may be a sincere thank you, or a kind remark to a someone waiting in line at the coffee shop. Who knows what God will do with your simple, but sincere act. You are welcome to do this more than once a day. You may find you enjoy it. If you are very shy you can start with a smile, or a friendly wave to an elderly person. Then advance to a “have a good day” before you turn to leave. People need to know they are seen. You have the power to add sunshine to a dreary day with a simple act of kindness. You will be glad you did. Be thankful you could. God will be smiling, and change will come.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
