Your Efforts

How can I convince you to start something even if it’s small and seemingly insignificant? Perhaps the best way is through example. A story if you would. It was 2002 and I faced an empty nest in the near future. I was in a panic. It was then I thought of a hobby I wanted to revisit, but I needed a group to keep me focused. So, I asked the church deacons at the time if I could start a knitting group and meet in our church. The answer was yes. I let the local print papers know (we had those back then) when and where our new group would meet, we advertised in the church’s bulletin and on their website. I even created a Facebook page. My hope was that five or six people would show up. When the first meeting night came there were about fifteen people. At one meeting we had thirty. Clearly there were others who wanted a group of people who shared their interest and love for this craft.
We became known as the Yarn Yarn Sisterhood – thanks to Jerry Spears who was our Pastor’s wife. We have done a wide variety of things over the years and not every member knits. Sure, we do charity work, but also important we have a reputation for being friendly and for supporting each other. There is a small core group who have participated from the beginning, and we rarely miss a meeting. Some members go to our church, and some do not. FBCH didn’t open its doors to us to add numbers to their rolls. When a church loves and truly wants to serve its community it opens its doors to address needs. Some of those needs may be physical but others may be emotional.
YYS is so central to my life that I can’t remember when I didn’t have it to lean on. I prayed for something to help me adjust to my life changes. God answered my prayers. In doing so, I like to think He has helped others, and that was something I hadn’t imagined. You never know what God will do with your efforts, but He can always use them no matter how small they may seem.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
