Changing Seasons

It’s officially Fall y’all. Last week the official first day of Autumn came and went on Monday. It began in a “Fall like” manner, cloudy, cool, a slight feeling of dampness to the air. But it left warm and sunny. Then again what do we expect? It’s not like any of our seasons in Virginia have an on/off switch. Just when we think we are going to wash away in July we find ourselves living through an arid August. September starts to offer a few cooler nights only to roast us during the day. The only thing we know for sure is that we will have four seasons, even if they get a bit mixed up at times.
The seasons of our lives tend to follow a similar pattern. There are no guarantees that you will feel better or perform more effectively now then you will in ten years from now. We humans have discovered many ways to grow older more successfully than our ancestors, then again some of those folks lived surprisingly long. How did they survive without power drinks and treadmills? We think we are so smart, so prepared, and so ready for whatever life will bring. We are experts at wishful thinking.
Autumn is nature’s way of winding down in preparation for winter. A cold, wet, and yet resting time. In the Fall of our lives, we can consider what our next season will be like. It may not be so hard, or it could be dismal. Worrying about it will not likely change it. So, what can we do? Live each day as the gift that it is. Focus on this transition time as a chance to make a difference and be excited to be alive. Your Autumn may have started long ago, or maybe you aren’t there yet, but it will come to all of us. So, enjoy the changes, embrace the opportunities, and for goodness sake be kind. Your kindness can warm someone’s chilly day. Like a cup of hot cider, or a stroll through crackling leaves, your kindness may make someone smile, feel warm, feel hopeful.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind.
