Emergency Contact

Linda Soller | Sep 15, 2025

How many times have you written down someone’s name and number as an emergency contact?

How many times has someone used you as an emergency contact? The answer is most likely often for both questions. Last week one of my grandchildren’s schools called me because they could not immediately locate the parents. My granddaughter told them to call me because she understood why her dad might not be answering. So, the school called, and as luck would have it, I was sitting by my house phone. The clinic nurse knew enough to start speaking immediately so I wouldn’t hang up. It was nothing too serious thankfully. Several important points were not lost on me after this situation. First, my granddaughter knew who to call. Secondly, I answered the phone and thirdly, the emergency contact system worked. I will suggest my daughter change my number to my cell, but that’s another story.

In life we all need emergency contacts at one time or another. It may be for a real emergency by anyone’s definition, or it may be our own personal “emergency”. Regardless, we need to know who to turn to. I think Christians are so lucky to understand the value of support. When we have an emergency, serious or otherwise, we know we can turn to God. Secondly, we understand that God is listening and if we could call Him on a phone He would answer. And last, but not least, our faith, reliance on God, and the sensible use of the services and systems around us work together to provide the support we need. I think the potential glitch in this connection is when we only speak to God in a dire emergency. I think He wants to be our emergency contact even in simple matters like frustration with other drivers on the road! God is always there for us. Whether our emergency is big or little He wants to support us. He is listening and guiding us through the situation. It’s good to have God as our primary emergency contact, but it’s even better that we have Him as our Lord.

Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
