Insignificant in a Good Way

Linda Soller | Aug 11, 2025

I heard a person say that the study of mankind’s history and nature made him feel insignificant in a good way. I could relate to that statement. In a world where so many seem to feel the need to be important, there is something comforting in knowing you are just a person doing the best you can. The pressure to leave a mark on history or nature is non-existent. If you should do something memorable or impactful  it will not because you felt pressure to do so, but because God was able to use your efforts and expand upon them.

In faith our job is not to find one big significant gesture for God. Our job is to serve Him daily in many small ways. He will decide what to do with our actions. I think sometimes we forget this fact. It becomes all too easy to feel disappointment or guilt over what we can’t accomplish. But perhaps if we slow down and take the time to look at the much bigger picture, we could better appreciate our insignificance. That door you held open for the person whose arms were full of groceries, the time you spent playing with a grandchild, the book you read to your elderly neighbor, or the contribution you made to that local charity were all impactful, just not in a big news sort of way. At the time you most likely considered your actions to be insignificant, if you thought twice about them at all. But God knows better. He understands the dynamics of mankind. He smiles at the joys of nature. So, continue to be caring, continue to feed the birds and embrace the pollinators in your yard. Say good morning to strangers, be quick with a smile, and slow to leave a person in need. Don’t waste water or any other resource. God can use all of your actions for the good, and you can enjoy being insignificant in a good way.

Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
