A Loss for Words

Linda Soller | Jul 07, 2025

I am seldom “at a loss for words.” That expression is most often associated with being surprised or overwhelmed in a particular moment or circumstance to the point of being speechless. At these times you can’t seem to express how you feel. But it can also apply to when you are dismayed, confused, exhausted, or even angry. If the second list is where you are then it may be a really good thing that you are at a loss for words.

My tendency is to say what is on my mind. And I imagine, like some of you I have regretted my natural ability to blurt out what was on my mind. If only those words could have been lost!  Don’t get me wrong. I think we all need to be able to express ourselves, but the trick is being able to remain in the moment and aware of the impact of your words. Easier said than done for some of us.

I have told you how much I value talking with God. It’s comforting, encouraging, and illuminating. What I struggle with is listening to God. I can comfortably express how I feel even when I know it may be wrong, but I am often too preoccupied with my words to hear His response. Recent demands on my time and obligations have increased my awareness of this shortcoming.  I don’t think He wants an apology from me, but I do think that He would appreciate it if now and then in our conversations I could be at a loss for words.

Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
