Thoughts on Rain

It’s pretty safe to say we need rain. Usually in the summer we are whining about the lack of rain (stay tuned to July blogs). But this spring and early summer we can’t really say we need more rain. Naturally we can complain about almost anything, and some of us often do, but the weather seems to be fair game for everyone to join in the critical remarks. Just last week I headed home from the gas station behind our church. The price was just too tempting even though I was well aware of the weather alerts and the huge storm clouds approaching. In my infinite wisdom I stopped to fill my car with gas thinking I could outrun the storm to my house. I was wrong, it happens! A fifteen-minute drive turned into a forty-five-minute ordeal. Four detours later around downed trees from the fierce wind and I was home. This week there was another storm “watch” followed by a ”warning”. The wind was not as bad, but the rain seemed to fall sideways, and the roads flooded like there were no drains or ditches. So much rain!
On the good side, besides the obvious thirsty trees and plants getting a good drink, this most recent storm lowered the outside temperature by twenty degrees in about twenty minutes. It was steamy but a pleasant change. Most of us weren’t ready for the recent extreme heat. This blog is not about climate change, at least not officially, it’s about warnings and reactions.
In our lifetime we are continually given warnings. Storms are warnings of the power of nature, the need for rain, the speed in which your life can change, and the fine line between being grateful, cautious, careless, and spoiled. Nature is so miraculous in so many ways, yet we power crazy humans like to think we don’t need to heed the warnings. I have always believed that God uses a wide variety of tools to teach us. He knows we often need some additional reminders. I like to think He uses nature to warn us to be careful and to teach us humility.
Be strong in the Lord and be kind!
