Generous Love

Linda Soller | Dec 23, 2024

At this time of year love is everywhere. The love of things, the season, the people, and so on. But is it generous love? There is a commercial where the theatre janitor is overheard singing softly, “What the world needs now, is love sweet love…”. His co-workers could have told him, I heard you singing, and it was lovely. It would have made his day. Instead, they rent him a tux and put him on the stage. They sit as his audience while he gets his moment to shine and share his talent. It’s a lovely sentiment. The co-workers give generous love. They go the extra mile to let him know of their admiration. Sure, it will all go back to normal afterwards. He won’t suddenly find himself living in the limelight. But for that moment he is a star. Imagine how full his heart felt after the generous love they showed.

Long ago in a busy city, a baby lay sleeping in a humble manger.  He would bring new meaning to generous love. Love that is self-sacrificing and all consuming. Love that is not egotistical or self-serving. Love that is boundless and abundant.

God is the master of generous love. He loves us even when we don’t deserve it. He loves us even when we doubt that He is listening. He just keeps giving us love. This season and in the coming year let us pledge to share love, not just token love, not expected love, or normal love, but generous love. It’s your gift to give, if you will.

Merry Christmas!
