Change of Perspective

Linda Soller | Nov 11, 2024

For me, election night would mean sitting around anxiously awaiting results that I could no longer impact. So, when the opportunity came to go with my daughter and her two daughters to the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience in nearby Leesburg I jumped at the chance. The weather was perfect for a magical walk in the dark woods. It was just the change I needed. And for those who wonder, I went dressed as Professor Minerva McGonagall.

When we find ourselves stuck, changing our perspective may provide inspiration. If we are stuck, sometimes changing our perspective provides solutions. If you work Sudoku puzzles you know what I mean. Sometimes you just can’t see the forest for the trees until you walk away. Maybe you do a load of laundry or get the mail. When you return you see the puzzle differently. Something jumps out, and TA DA! you find you can continue filling in the squares.

In the life of a church, regardless of size, it can be easy to get stuck in a pattern. How do we fill in the next block? What can I do to fix a problem? Where are we going?  All of these are legitimate questions. However, sometimes we need to change our focus, even briefly, to see the light at the end of the tunnel and get answers. Changing our focus can help change our perspective. There are new ways to do the old things. There are new opportunities we hadn’t considered. There may even be old ways of doing old things that we need not change.

This week you might want to test this idea. To help change your perspective on anything, you might try a walk outside to see the wonderful fall colors. You might read a chapter in a book and lose yourself in a story for a short time. You could even tackle a job around the house you’ve been avoiding. Whatever you do, keep in mind we humans are resilient and creative creatures. A change in perspective may just be the start of something amazing.
