Asking Why

Linda Soller | Sep 30, 2024

We humans come to this world as curious beings. Some quietly observing to understand. Some of us are physical investigators seeking answers. Still others spend time asking “why ?” Which are you?  Wanting answers to our questions seems to be as natural to humans as breathing. This constant search for answers helps us learn, explore, grow, and ultimately find our place in the world. Unfortunately, most of us grow from inquisitive children to self-conscience adults. We may even begin to think we have all the answers.

In the Drop-In class we read how the disciples were often confused, especially when Jesus tried to explain how He would die and rise again for us. They responded to His teachings by saying He must be wrong. Sometimes they remained quiet but still confused. All they needed to do was ask why. That simple question would have gone a long way to helping Jesus help them to understand.

Asking why, politely, isn’t a statement of ignorance, but a statement that says I want to understand. Trying to understand the world around us goes a long way to making us more empathetic. When on the receiving end of the question, we need to remember the person asking why is not necessarily saying we are wrong. Asking why is a way to continue communication.  When we actually communicate, we start to understand. We may not always agree, and that is okay, but we might just find a common ground.

So why don’t you ask why?
