New Neighbors

Linda Soller | May 13, 2024

I have three sets of new neighbors. The big family seems very happy. The parents are always busy, but I have to say the kids are pretty demanding. Across the way in the modern A-frame is a couple. They are still moving in, so I don’t know them yet. Then in the fairly large custom home is a family who clearly felt the need to immediately remodel. You do know I am talking about birds? The Chickadee family is lively. At feeding time I’ve seen as many as four mouths at the door. I understand they can have 6-13 babies. The couple are House Wrens whose nest building seems to be going well. Last but not least are the Nuthatches who moved into the house my husband built and hung on the back of our house. While they don’t peck on its walls all the time, it’s pretty reliable in the evenings when we are watching TV. Maybe we’re too loud?

I’ll admit that I know more about my bird neighbors then I do about my people neighbors. I’m not proud of it. Why is it so easy for some of us to relate to nature and strangers on the internet and so hard for us to be friendly and welcoming to our neighbors?  If I knew the answer I would tell you. I’m currently reading a book about poverty, specifically about those who find themselves without a reliable place to live. These people we pass on the streets and see camped out here and there are also our neighbors. If I can’t make the effort to meet and hopefully better understand the people who live right next door, then what chance do I have to help in the plight of those needing food, shelter, and connection? I hope to revisit this topic and see what we can learn. I seriously doubt I will uncover any easy answers. There are so many considerations blocking the way, some real and some more stigma than reality.

The Chickadees will be leaving their home soon going out in the harsh real world. The House Wrens are anticipating a family, and the Nuthatches may well make an appearance in my family room if we are not careful. New neighbors are a gift.

Be kind, be brave, have faith!  : )   Linda
