Last Tuesday’s Autumnal Equinox marked the official start of fall, my favorite season, which is uniquely known by two names. “Fall” isn’t slang or just American shorthand; it’s the older term. In the 1500s, English speakers called this season the “fall of the leaf,” similar to how they called spring the “spring of the leaf.” Although spring’s name was shortened and remained popular internationally, “fall” was also abbreviated and spread overseas. By 1700 in England, the French term “autumn” gained popularity, causing “fall” to gradually become less common there, while it remained in use here.
