The Light You See

Linda Soller | Dec 19, 2022

It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere this time of year without seeing Christmas lights. But what do you really see? Some are small and understated, while others are over the top. Some are spiritual like manger scenes and others are all about the modern aspects of Christmas. Trees ignored and even recently cursed for dropping so many leaves in the fall find themselves wrapped in strings of light. I worry they may be choking! In fairness, I think most people put out holiday lights to make themselves and others smile. But this time of year, can be hard, especially if you have suffered a loss in your life. If you have lost a loved one or a love, a home or a job, a friend, or a beloved pet, well you get the picture. It can be hard to enjoy the holidays even with all the lights.

I’ve heard it said that when you look at Christmas lights if you squint so everything is sort of fuzzy, that what you see will speak to your heart. Lights may appear to twinkle. You may see halos glowing in the sky. The wild colors that scream at you most times may look like rainbows. Your heart wants to feel the joy of the season, but your head may not have come around yet. It’s not wrong to feel loss. It would be much sadder if you never cared enough about anything or anyone to be able to mourn a loss. In fact, feeling loss means you felt connected at one time and that is not a bad thing. Take your time and give yourself some space to grieve or feel sad if you need to. No matter what you see on TV not all “stories” have the desired happy ending. You are not alone. Give some thought to the light you see whether it’s covering a yard or shining from a single candle. Let it speak to your heart. It may just make you smile.

Merry Christmas Everyone!
