A Queen’s Legacy

Linda Soller | Sep 19, 2022

The music became somber and the words “Remembering Queen Elizabeth II – 1926-2022” came on the TV screen along with a picture of a smiling queen. My heart sank.  She had not been my monarch, and at her age (96) it could be expected. None of those things mattered. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain had held that position my entire life. Her face and her smile had grown older along with all of us. Her legacy was one for the world to share.

Not everyone agrees with the need for a monarchy. Conflict with the British monarchy had driven we colonists to feel compelled to go our own way. And yet, I admire how the British democracy is able to balance its influence, objectives, and volatility with the reliable presence of a monarch. Queen Elizabeth II could be firm and forthright when needed. She could be quiet and reassuring as well. To have begun her reign so young and for it to continue for so long (Britain’s longest-reigning monarch 1952-2022) she was forced to learn how to care for her own subjects while dealing with an ever changing modern and violent world. Those of us who observed her learned  over the years that you can make a difference without making more drama. In true human form the Queen’s life did have personal drama and once again she addressed it in a thoughtful manner remaining true to herself. How she conducted her life is another part of her legacy.

The mother of four, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of 12 her family was dear to her. That being said she didn’t shy away from expressing her concerns, displeasures, pride or love. Recognizing that her family’s position brought great responsibility she found a balance in her loyalty to family and to her realm. The kind of balance that is difficult to find and even harder to maintain.

For all of the pomp and ceremony that comes with a royal family, I think my fondest memories will be seeing Queen Elizabeth II in a brightly colored outfit with matching hat, smiling that hopeful smile that all will be well.

Be the love in the world  :o)
