Using the Word Love

Linda Soller | Feb 14, 2022

The word love, much like the word hero, is more commonly used in our everyday language than it was a hundred years ago. I love many PBS shows. I love to knit. I love to walk in my neighborhood. I love my family.  You can probably see where I’m going with this. We use a word so much that it becomes sort of watered down. The impact of the truly special times gets lost in the every day tossing about of the word.  True love of something or someone may demand sacrifice. Our personal needs may have to take a back seat to the needs of the object of our love. With that in mind I find myself understanding how frequently I overstate my feelings by using the word love. So, I truly enjoy many PBS shows. I’m a fan of knitting, a big fan. I value my walks in the neighborhood. I love my family.

Jesus demonstrated love on many levels. When He healed people who came to Him it was out of love. Even when He had not met them before, He loved them. He would sacrifice His life for them. When He told us to love one another He was talking about the love that may require sacrifice, devotion, commitment, and yes some inconvenience. He saw love as what it could do for others and often we think of it as what it can do for us.

To say I love PBS or knitting is really a way of saying they make me happy. There is nothing wrong with being happy. Yet it never crosses my mind to say watching many of the PBS shows really makes me happy. As we go through the month of February our society focuses on love. Black history month reminds us of a time when many were not loved, but should have been, should be. It’s a call to love everyone regardless of race or origin. Valentine’s Day reminds us of romantic love and love of friends and family. The people we would make sacrifices for without hesitation.

As you go through the month of February, take the time to consider love. How are you using the word?

Be the love in the world!  :o)
