Love in Words

Linda Soller | Feb 07, 2022

Sometimes you hear the lyrics to a song, or read the lines of a card and think, “I can’t top that.” Maybe you wonder how a person was brought to write their words of love and comfort. After all so much of love is about comfort. So it didn’t surprise me when one Sunday during our worship we sang The Gift of Love.  When I sing in the choir I focus on singing my notes more than the actual words, but from my comfy chair at home, on that particular Sunday, I focused on the words. Today I offer those lyrics to you for your consideration in this month when we celebrate love, and freedom. The tune is an old English melody. It has been used more than once. Hal H. Hopson wrote these words in 1972. Remember last week when I talked about the power of the written word. I think this song helps prove my point.

“The Gift of Love”

“Though I may speak, with bravest fire,

And have the gift to all inspire,

And have not love my words are vain,

As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess,

And striving so, my love profess,

But not be given by love within,

The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control,

Our spirits long to be made whole.

Let inward love guide every deed;

By this we worship, and are freed.”

Be the love in the world!  :o)
