The Lure of Halloween

Linda Soller | Nov 01, 2021

The celebration of Halloween had truly taken on a life of its own in the past ten years. More and more it’s a holiday for adults. Some would tell you this trend is driven by the adults who missed a true Halloween experience as children due to horrible things that happened. Their parents naturally became protective and sought non-traditional ways to celebrate. I’m sure that is part of it, but the lure of Halloween is also in the ability for a person to escape. You can escape into a personality you love like a princess or a pirate. Maybe you wish you were stronger or bigger, so you become a dinosaur. You might be as sweet as pie, but on Halloween you become a witch! Admit it, you like to escape now and then. It’s not everyday you can actually become something or someone else.

We also seek other means of escaping our routine lives. Who hasn’t been tired, bored, or sad about their current condition? The means for temporarily escaping the routine are endless. Sometimes they are harmless and other times they are not. More importantly the escaping can feel easier than the facing up to the source of those feelings. I am not suggesting that every time a person gets a little bummed about their life, they should make a U-turn and head in a different direction. I am suggesting that we may not be applying our faith to those times as we could. Are we praying to be inspired, or encouraged to find new avenues to serve? Are we seeking instruction from the Bible on how to respond to difficult situations which may make us want to run or hide? Faith is a living breathing part of our Christian life. Faith is not meant to be set on a shelf and brought down on Sundays. Faith can help you become the person you want to be and live the life you want to live. The lure of Halloween is fantasy, but the power of faith is very real.

Be the difference in the world! :o)
