Lessons Learned

Linda Soller | Jul 06, 2020

The expression “hard-headed” comes to mind as I observe the news. Why do we struggle to learn lessons as we go through life?  I have spent some time thinking about the lessons I have learned over the past few months. You probably could make your own list, but I’ll share a few of mine.

  1. Once we start letting go of “things” we are able to keep letting go. Eventually we see we can do with less. The hardest part of this lesson is getting started. Early on my husband and I had an opportunity to dispose of a good amount of stuff. Things we were not using, some things to give away, some things to throw away, but all of it taking up space in our home. The give away items sat clustered for a while waiting for the opportunity to deliver them to a charity. The eventual run to the recycling center was like having a huge weight lifted from our shoulders. Since then we have found ourselves asking what was I thinking when I hung on to this thing? Lesson learned – if you truly value something, treat it well, use it, or display it. Learning what “things” are important to you can be a revelation and a relief.
  2. You can change habits that negatively impact your health. Those initial weeks of working from home with all the bad news were very stressful. I won’t say I was fearful, but I will say I was tense. I held that tension in my body as I typed, knitted, and walked in the neighborhood. Eventually the tension turned to soreness and aches like I had never experienced. Taking the time to look at the causes of your health issues is a great place to start, followed by action. Lesson learned – you can’t turn back the clock, but you may be able to disarm the alarm! Think about it for a minute.
  3. If you need to check your blood pressure and you want to check your weight, check your blood pressure first! We humans are complex and simple at the same time. Lesson learned – So much of our lives are interconnected. Be kind to yourself and others. Sounds simple enough.

What lesson will you learn this week? :o) Linda
