Last Tuesdays Autumnal Equinox marked the official start of fall, my favorite season, which is uniquely known by two names. Fall” isn’t slang or just American shorthand; it’s the older term. In the 1500s, English speakers called this season the “fall of the leaf,” similar to how they called spring the “spring of the leaf.” Although spring’s name was shortened and remained popular internationally, “fall” was also abbreviated and spread overseas. By 1700 in England, the French term “autumn” gained popularity, causing “fall” to gradually become less common there, while it remained in use here.

My wife loves spring and summer, but she doesn’t like fall because it feels so sad. I, on the other hand, have always loved fall, though I can’t explain exactly why. It could be because my birthday falls in the last week of October, but I don’t think that’s exactly it. I don’t think it’s because of Halloween or Thanksgiving, or because Christmas is coming soon. It definitely wasn’t because of the start of school or the football season.

I look forward to beautiful fall days. Spring weather can be unpredictable, but fall offers great weather for outdoor fun. Fall weather is more predictable, with cool temps and blue skies, making it perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, festivals, hayrides, maize mazes, pumpkin picking, bonfires, and decorating the house for fall.

Fall is a season marked by change, beauty, and reflection. It brings cooler weather, falling leaves, and cozy moments. While some eagerly anticipate pumpkin-spiced coffee, I look forward to hot apple cider and chili. Though I appreciate the smell and taste of pumpkin spice, I don’t think we need pumpkin-spice-flavored Pop-Tarts, Mini-Wheats, or Cheerios. Seasonal delights like pumpkin-spiced lattes, warm blankets, and crisp mornings are more than just treats; they are small blessings from a loving God. These simple joys encourage us to slow down and appreciate life’s goodness. God takes pleasure in giving us both big and small gifts. Recognizing these moments fosters gratitude and joy, as life’s little blessings mirror His love and show that even the smallest details matter deeply to Him.

This season makes me think of my favorite scripture: Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him (Psalm 34:8). After a hot, long summer, there is much to celebrate. We can thank God for small joys that brighten our days and show His goodness. Even during busy or tough times, we can find happiness in His provision and care. He can be our refuge in times of difficulty, and we can thank Him for being a God who loves to bless His children.

Take care and happy fall to all!
