The road taken or not

Linda Soller | Mar 04, 2013

I must say that my favorite poet is Robert Frost. I like the way he describes his scenes so simply and clearly, and I have to admit I like all the rhyming. My favorite poem by Frost is “The Road Not Taken.”  It describes the dilemma of selecting the path we take in life.

The Bible is full of stories that take place on the road.  Jesus used stories of his encounters with people along the roads on which he traveled. He taught as he walked along, and amazing transformations took place in people’s lives.  As we approach Easter the road continues to hold great significance.

I never really connected the Bible to my favorite poem. The jury is still out on what Robert Frost really believed, but in Matthew 7:13-14 the Bible speaks to a wide gate and a narrow gate. It is similar to the poem in that it describes a wide easy gate selected by many and a narrow gate, much less popular.

We face roads and choices every day. It’s tempting to take the easy route even when we know it could be risky. If everyone is going that way how bad can it be? And we ask ourselves, maybe not in so many words, but we consider how hard do we want to work for things. Wouldn’t it be nice to go the easy way? Jesus taught us to make the right decisions even when they aren’t the easiest.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”   R. Frost

Have a great week :o) Linda
