The Art of Sharing

Linda Soller | Jan 21, 2019

Lunch conversation between Alexandra (age 2) and her mom, about her cousin Molly (age 4).

Alexandra – “Molly not here…. I love Molly” Mom – “I love Molly too!”  Alexandra – “NO! Molly my friend”. Sometimes it’s hard to share. Sharing is a skill we learn with time and experience. I can confirm that little Alexandra really does love her cousin, and for her it might not make sense for her mom to love Molly too. Love, friends, and sharing are big concepts for a two-year-old.

I am guessing you are a bit older, but sharing is not easy for adults either. We think we are generous, but how often do we really share something which is valuable to us? Sharing means to give a portion of something to others, or to use or enjoy something jointly with others. This month, as we consider maturing in our faith, I wonder about out interactions with other people. Do you tell others about God, or keep him for yourself? Do you go to church so you can share and grow your faith, or stay away fearing what you gain won’t be as valuable as what you give up? How will you ever know if you don’t try? Faith is certainly personal, but we gain so much by sharing our faith.

Children are like sponges, ready to watch, listen, and learn. Alexandra will get the whole sharing thing eventually. She will start to value the feeling she gets when she shares with someone and sees how happy it makes them. She will learn that everyone needs friends and people who love them, and it’s okay to have more than one of each. She has plenty of time to learn, but you are a bit further along in life. When will you consider the art of sharing? Maybe I should ask when was the last time you truly shared?

Have a great week?  :o) Linda
