Is it that time again?

Yes I am going to remind you to vote. You probably thought this was one place where you could escape from talk of the election. Well, you are partially correct. Unlike the hundreds of phone calls and TV commercials which have bombarded you for that last few months, I am not going to tell you who to vote for. I am not going to try and convince you that one person who is running for office is far superior to his/her opponent. I am just going to tell you to vote.  Hey I saw you roll your eyes, yes you!  Give me a chance here.

I get so tired of hearing people say that their response to the irritation that is called the election season is not to vote. “One vote doesn’t matter anyway,” they say.  I have to disagree. We are so blessed to have the ability to elect our officials. Sometimes we elect people who have no business running anything in to positions of power but when we realize our mistake we get to vote them out again. Where else can people participate so freely in their government knowing that the country will survive even in times of some serious transition? We don’t wake up the day after the election and fear that some big shot’s army will march through our streets and arrest us for voting against them.  When the person we voted for doesn’t live up to our expectations we can take their bumper sticker off our car and no one will give us grief.

Have I convinced you yet? Did I mention that you, an adult, get to wear an I Voted sticker all day at work?  What else can I say? Let me end with this - do you think that when God watches over you, sees you being kind and helping others, or listens as you pray that he ever says “oh just forget them, they are only one person they don’t make a difference”? I don’t think so. We are all given individual gifts, but in this country we have the added gift of a system of government that thrives through our participation. God asks us to make a difference in this world, in this country, and in our communities. You are important to God and your vote is important to all of us. Have a great week :o)
