Who cares?

Linda Soller | Feb 29, 2016

Can you believe February is over? Two months of the new year gone. Granted some of the winter weather hung on for what felt like forever, but overall it seems time flies by. My dad used to tell me, “Time goes by faster each year as you grow older.” I felt sure he was exaggerating, but I was just a kid. Then I thought, who cares if time goes by fast? When you are a kid a free afternoon with nothing to do seems miserable, and later as an adult you find yourself dreaming of an afternoon with nothing to do. Wisdom is passed down from one generation to the next if we will listen.

A friend told me of a business acquaintance who fell and hit their head. She learned of it the next day. The others with the injured woman let her go off on her own after her fall, the next morning when she didn’t show up on time, no one cared enough to check. My friend assisted her acquaintance through some necessary duties, then took her to the hospital to be checked. After a long day, they were there late into the night. Who cares enough to interrupt their busy schedule and take care of others? Someone who values life and friends takes care of others.

A lovely lady, who is not young in years, but is young in spirit, makes coffee every Sunday at our church well before anyone else arrives. The coffee is hot when people first come in and all the fixings are out and ready. Who cares about the hidden faces that make things happen for us? Do we ever stop long enough to thank them or seek them out? People who make small things happen form the cornerstones of happiness for others, often without a second thought.

A boss I once worked for was full of sayings about managing people. He was big on hiring people who cared for others because they wanted everyone to be successful. I remember he said, “Always hire the person who cares enough to know the name of the janitor in his office building.” Do you? Such a person values human beings for who they are, regardless of what they do.

Time does seem to fly by faster each year, and I learned to make the most of my days. A friend should stop to help a friend in need, even when they feel too busy. Making coffee when others are still at home in their PJs may not be necessary, but it sure is wonderful. Knowing the people around you, who make a contribution to your day, can make your days seem all the more special. Who cares? You may ask yourself, but I think you know the answer. God cares, and so should we.

Have a great week!  :o)  Linda
